Is the ipad a mobile?

I just had a quick surf through all my favourite mobile blogs and I was surprised at how many featured articles on the ipad.

Although the ipad is more akin to a big iphone than a small laptop it does miss the vital ingredient that makes it mobile, that being a sim card to make calls and send texts.

So what I’m I seeing here, is it bloggers stuck for true mobile content or is it just part of the convergence of the mobile and digital worlds?

Well you can’t escape that laptops and mobiles are converging. Bloggers do get excited about the latest tech, they can’t help it if it comes out with an apple logo.

  2. The iPad will essentially be seen as another form of communication, separate from the mobile due to the nature of intimacy.

A mobile phone is the media that is never at an arms length away, and vary rarely shared, whereas the iPad would be used and shared amongst a number of people, maybe within a family.

I think that the iPad will be a ’sofa surfing’ device, and the user wont feel like they’ve ‘lost a limb’ if they forget to take it out and about with them like they would a phone.

I think you’re right Thomas, the ipad is definitely a sofa surfing device, justified by they way Steve Jobs demo’d it while sitting on a couch.

I actually like your ‘lost a limb’ analogy, I think I’ll use this in future to assess if a device should be categorised as a mobile.

  4. Thank you very much Gary, looks like my training here at Yodel is going in the right direction!

I’m afraid I had another little go at iPads and iPhones on my blog the other day. Feel free to have a look at it here:-

Also, I feel sure it’s not just me who thinks the name ‘iPad’ sounds far too much like a panty liner…
