I actually like your 'lost a limb' analogy, I think I'll use this in future to assess if a device should be categorised as a mobile. A mobile phone is the media that is never at an arms length away, and vary rarely shared, whereas the iPad would be used and shared amongst a number of people, maybe within a family.
